The University of South Carolina official fight song is derived from the Broadway musical ôHow Now, Dow Jonesö song ôStep to the Rearö by Bernstein and Penn in 1968. The football coach, Paul Dietzel, liked the song and anonymously wrote the South Carolina lyrics to make it the fight song. Dietzel did not want other coaches of other sports to know he wrote the lyrics, since they may have not approved its use coming from a football coach.
